5 tips to relieve your hangover

We offer you 5 effective remedies to recover as soon as possible from the effects of a hangover on your body

Dehydration, headache or fatigue are the typical symptoms that appear after a night of excess alcohol, but why does our body react this way? And most importantly, what can we do to remedy hangover symptoms?

What is a hangover?

The hangover, according to Wikipedia, is a “picture of general discomfort produced by excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.” Doing a little more research, we see that there are up to 3 factors that can cause a hangover:

  • Dehydration: Dehydration is caused due to the inactivation of the hormone ADH (antidiuretic hormone), responsible for reabsorbing water molecules. Alcohol consumption inhibits this hormone and makes us go to the toilet very frequently (hence the colour of the urine is completely transparent since it is mainly water). This produces dehydration that ends up causing symptoms of headache, dry mouth, thirst or irritation.
  • Acetaldehyde poisoning: This organic compound is one of the main causes of the appearance of hangovers and is 20 times more toxic than ethanol, the main component of alcohol.
  • The decrease in blood glucose ( hypoglycemia ): because our liver is trying to metabolize the ethanol that contains alcohol, there is a drop in glucose levels in the brain, and that is why we notice symptoms of discomfort and weakness.

How can we avoid or reduce our hangover?

The only 100% effective solution is to avoid drinking alcohol or do it in a moderate way, but if it is too late, we offer you some tips that can help you reduce the effects of a hangover and recover as soon as possible:

Stop dehydration

After having taken several litres of alcohol, it is recommended that you also drink a large amount of water as soon as possible to avoid the effects of dehydration. Forget caffeine and consume vitamin C and fructose because they help the liver metabolize alcohol and eliminate it faster. We especially recommend orange juice or, if you prefer to innovate, any of these multivitamin juices that you can prepare yourself.

Start sweating!

Doing cardio exercises is the best way to excrete toxins through sweat and breathing, yes, it is very important that before exercising you have hydrated yourself and have digested enough food (recommended carbohydrates) to stabilize blood sugar. During exercise, you should also drink water regularly to avoid cramps or excessive exhaustion. The most recommended exercise is to go for a walk, bicycle or elliptical in a moderate way.

Foods that help metabolize alcohol

Several foods offer fluency to the liver to combat the effects of alcohol, such as avocados, which help the body to produce glutathione, a compound that helps the liver cleanse harmful toxins; the grapefruit, for its high content of vitamin C and antioxidants; the apples, because they help release toxins from the digestive tract; the nuts, by high amounts of arginine that contains, which help in detoxification of ammonia; or green tea, a powerful antioxidant that can help with headaches or nausea.

Avoid glutamine

Alcohol intake inhibits the synthesis of glutamine, a natural stimulant that our body produces. The inhibition of this amino acid can help you to sleep more easily when you are drunk, but once the binge is over, the rebound of glutamine is generated, that is, the body synthesizes more glutamine than we need and interferes with the normal activity of the body: difficulties in sleeping, fatigue, anxiety, tremors, etc. To alleviate this effect, you can take magnesium-rich foods such as spinach, nuts or dark chocolate.

A yoga session works miracles: practising yoga is an excellent hangover cure, because it releases toxins, improves circulation and the digestion process. In addition, their postures help blood flow throughout the body more easily and thus speed up the recovery process.

We hope that these tips are useful to relieve the symptoms of your hangover and remember that you should consume alcohol in a moderate way so that your body does not suffer the consequences.
